Hugh Illingworth

From beginnings in the West Riding of Yorkshire, following school in Rutland, I trained as a mechanical engineer in the machine tool industry but finalised my career working in London based managerial roles within the printing and publishing industries.

After some thirty years of living and working in London and meeting my wife Debby, we moved to Hertfordshire to raise our young children and subsequently relocated to Rutland in 2001 when we realised that we did not need London as a place to work.

Having settled in Oakham, we ran a limited company engaged in delivery of new vehicles for motor dealerships, provided chauffeuring services for weddings and continued with publishing interests, which did not cease until Covid.

Aside from work, I have been heavily involved in charity work. With an initial interest in sailing, I started sailing in the tall ship TS Royalist, flagship of the Sea Cadets and have served on the committee of the Square Rigger Club Charity for nearly forty years and holding all the offices at some time. This charity supports the ship and encourages young people of all able backgrounds to sail in her by providing bursaries. In turn, this leads to a good take-up of young people into the Royal Navy. My interest still persists although I have recently stepped down from the committee.

Within Rutland I have continually been involved in making music and play the trumpet in both local bands and orchestras with an additional interest being the piano accordion. My wife is also involved with singing with the Rutland Choral Society.

Just over three years ago and with our children having flown the nest, we relocated from Oakham to Uppingham along with two dogs and a cat and currently enjoy living in The Elms, off the Leicester Road, where I am one of the founder members of TERA, the resident's association, taking on the responsibility of Neighbourhood Watch.

Now, fully retired but with plenty of interests and hobbies including dog walking and cycling, I look forward to assisting the people of Uppingham through the Town Council in a practical and pragmatic way for the benefit of the town and its residents.
